It's an acquired skill that takes some time to get correct. My first 300 sharpening sessions were a learning experience.

I finally found the perfect combination, at least for me.

The Work Sharp will put a very nice edge on a knife. It's all I use on my kitchen knives.

For my carry or hunting knives, I follow up with a Spyderco Sharpmaker to get an edge you can actually shave with.

The learning curve for both of these is very short.
